While our understanding of, and knowledge of the brain's functions have vastly improved over the last 4500 years we still have a long way to go before we fully understand our own brains and how they work. More than any other organ in our body the brain often presents us with mysteries as to its functioning. From the ancient Egyptians, to former US President George Bush's "decade of the brain" in the 1990's we humans are driven to understand how the brain controls our behaviour, cognition, emotion, and memory, while also running the rest of our body in order to keep us alive. As we continue to push the boundaries of our knowledge we also continue to gain a better understanding of why things go wrong with the brain, and the effects of injuries, drugs, and sometimes our own genetics.
